“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” – 2 Corinthians 9:15
Have you ever been surprised by someone’s generosity? As young marrieds, I remember receiving a call from an elderly gentleman in our home church telling us that he was going to purchase a brand-new washer and dryer for us as a college graduation gift. We were taken by surprise because we felt it was an extravagant gift from someone who wasn’t a relative. However, we were also overwhelmed with gratitude because we hardly had any appliances and we were getting ready to move to our first ministry position. This man truly exemplified the heart of a giving God in a season that we really needed it.
As I reflect on that moment, I can’t help but think about the radical generosity that God demonstrated to the human race the first Christmas morning. The cries of the newborn baby, Jesus, reverberated in the Bethlehem cave, proclaiming God’s loving nature to all. As Jesus grew up and lived among us, His life perpetually proclaimed, “Father God is good, He loves giving to us, and I’m here, among other things, to prove it.” Jesus embodies the generosity of God. So how do we respond to God’s indescribable gift? I would propose in a comparable way that we received a brand-new washer and dryer. We didn’t earn it or even deserve it, but we accepted it with gratitude. The extravagant gift that God offers to all people must be received by faith with a heart of thanks. He provides forgiveness of sins and eternal life, for all who would say “yes” to the gift of His son, Jesus Christ.
Father God, I thank you for the indescribable gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. I know that I can’t earn salvation, but I receive it through grace by faith in Jesus Christ. I also realize that this is a gift that keeps on giving. With a thankful heart, help me to share the indescribable gift of salvation with others during this holiday season.
